The NS 6300 was the last Steam locomotive which was designed in the Netherlands and came into service on October 27, 1931. The locomotive was meant for the transport of coal trains from South Limburg to the West of the Netherlands. 22 of these machines were built in 1930 and 1931, 10 were built by Henschel & Sohn in Kassel and the remaining 12 were built by the Berliner Maschinenbau A.G. in Berlin. At the time of construction, these machines, with their 127 tons of serviceable weight, were almost the heaviest tender locomotives in Europe.
During the Second World War eleven locomotives were taken to Germany. 10 of these machines returned to the Netherlands after the war, of which 8 remained in service. The locomotives that were put back into service were removed in 1955 and 1957.
Only one locomotive, the 6317, still remains which is owned by the Dutch Railway Museum since 1959.
