  • Hi all. I still have many of my files I created for trainz and would like to use them for creations in Transport fever. What programs are the .mdl formats opened with and how can the models be exported to mdl format please. Any tutorials out there? Is there a program to use to edit mdl files?
I see there are many persons from trainz already here. sorry to be such a late arrival.
    thank you in advance.

  • Welcome!

I use blender and the Blender import export plugin which can be found somewhere in the download area.
    Blender Import/Export Add-on
The .mdl .msh etc. can be opened with mist text editing programs such as Notepad++

    Tutorials... not looking that great.
The Moddingleitfaden is in german but maybe it can help you.

  • The .mdl file is a text file written in LUA. You only need a text editor for that. Notepad++ is excellent. If you're on Mac I highly recommend CODA. It's gorgeous (and makes me miss having a Mac..)

I use this model converter to convert .obj to .msh/.msh.blob

My 3D models are made in Modo and textured with Substance Painter. Both of them cost money, but you can get Modo Indie on Steam which is quite a bit cheaper than the full app, and Substance Painter can be obtained for free if you're a student.

While Substance Painter isn't required to create textures, it is definitely the best way, as it's simply "what you see is what you get", and you can paint directly on the 3D model instead of a flat UV map.

Alternatives are 3Ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D (and the list goes on..). The only free 3D modeler I know of is Blender.

True, but I mean... at least there's this:
