  • Hello all,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here goes.

There are now several good catenary mods out there that focuses on the realism of the wire itself. I found this mod here Ziehbare Oberleitungen Basic which is totally brilliant. The only thing I wish I could find are Catenary masts that supports ziggzagg of +/- 30cm (the offsett of the wire for equal wear on the carbon strip) in Norway System 20 has a +/-40cm and system 25 (130km/h and above) uses +/-30cm. Placing the mast itself with that offset would look terrible.

  • Many people want a lot of realism without realising how much work it is - for the player. Basically, it is nearly impossible to automatically determine if the curvature of the rail is asking for zigzag or simply following the curve. So, for building this, you will have to - in addition to everything else -:

    * Change a setting for each single wire segment

    * Choose the right pole

This is quite a lot of work on a sensible railway system, especially if you also plan to use correct tensioning. So, my guess is that 1000 people will ask for it, 50 would give it a serious try and 2 really would arrive at a realistic catenary system for a great part of their map. And for these two, it is too much work to adapt tens of pole configurations. Except, jag-999 is one of the 50.(in fact, for the 48 it is a time saver not to have the possibility.)

And before trying this, I think it would be good to implement yet another parameter to everything (because it is not too much work for the catenaries itself): The messenger wire usually follows the centre line of the rails, and only the contact wire is zigzagging, so there should be an additional twist. But this also has to be implemented at all elements for suspension.

  • Completely aware of that. You don't really zig zag in curves as the catenary mast is places in such a way that it will have coverage over the carbon strip from mast to mast :)

I have used the mentioned catenary wire mod and added +/-30cm. What I'm asking for is if there are any catenary MASTS out there where it is possible to place the stagger at +/-30cm or if there are any masts where they have two masts where one has the stagger at a -30 and one with a +30 offsett. Of course the mast itself should be at the standard distance from the track at either 3m or 2.5m.

I have zero issues with detailing this, hence why I'm asking ;) Once can call it an occupational hazard :p

I've just started trying to build my own masts and catenaries with the two cool mods from jag-999 instead of the vanilla. It is at least relatively easy to vary the length of the cantilevers and thus suggest the zig-zag. Unfortunately, the contact wire is still always centred over the track.

With other software it works correctly, as you can see in ZUSI or TS, for example. However, I don't know at the moment whether there is an automatic system for setting the masts and cantilevers.

Btw. Nice to see you hanging around here too. I always enjoy watching your epic winter rides on the Bergen railway.

  • I don't know at the moment whether there is an automatic system for setting the masts and cantilevers.

Unlikely, because of the curves which require different handling (as I wrote above). There is some dead code in the different "ziehbare Oberleitung" mods which originally should automatically place masts. And if there was an easy solution, Urban Games likely would have done it.

ZUSI and TS are bad examples because they have pre-defined worlds with a limited range of positions where your camera might be. This makes many things easier (no detailed landscape or even painted walls for things you never can get near to). And you do not have to build the scenery. And, also as I wrote, this is not so much a problem for modding except that jag-999 became tired after working on poles for several months. Just two more parameters for pole and two for the wires (and a lot of adapting models), and it is done. But the user has to reconfigure at least two of these four parameters for each pole, which is the real problem.

  • If you use this mod: Ziehbare Oberleitungen Basic for the catenary you can Y-offsett it with up to +/- 0.5m.

You place it at -0.3 at the start then change the offset to +0.3 and et voila, you have now a catenary that crosses over from -30cm to +30cm and then you just change it again to -0.3 and so forth to go zigg zagg, that is how you make it :D Then you need to place masts that are adhering to this offset, but since there aren't any masts that does it...

Whaaat? Awesome :D Thank you for watching my videos :D

  • Ah, I see, we would need xx more cantilever variants for the different distances from the centre. So either straight overhead line and matching cantilevers or zig-zag overhead line and non-matching cantilevers. hmmmm... as they say in German: ‘einen Tod muss man sterben’

OT: But I certainly watch them (at least sometimes, when I feel like it, to enjoy the winter landscape, which we rarely have here). And next year I'll be travelling to Norway (and Finland and Sweden) with my wife and caravan to see the landscape in real life.
