A "Posto di Passaggio" is a place where a double track line becomes single track or vice versa. It also means a place where you wait a lot of time if your train or the one you are supposed to meet is late 
The recent inauguration of a freight service to a steel mill meant that delays went from "few" to "way too much". Therefore, I started doubling the line and also straightening it, as the average speed on this particular stretch is about 90 km/h.
The old track has the advantage of being able to enjoy the very nice scenery out of the window while your train is late, while the new line will mostly be underground...
