The JR 103 series is the successor of the more or less similar-looking 101 series. It was built as an electric multiple unit from 1963 to 1984 and continues to be operated by JR Kyushu and JR West. It was built in 8 different subseries, some of which have differences even in those subseries. In total 3447 vehicles were built, of which 63 vehicles still remain in service. Those trains are probably best known for their use on Tokyo's Yamanote Line, but were actually used by 4 out of the 7 JR Companies, which made them a widespread icon of railways in Japan. One of the last services with those trains with the lower front window was replaced only a week ago on 18. March 2023, when a 207 series train replaced the regular 103 on the Wadamisaki Line near Kobe.
