Schmalspurbahnen wurden früher oft genutzt, um die Industriebetriebe auch in den Städten mit Gütern zu beliefern. Damit man auf das zeitaufwendige Umladen verzichten konnte, wurden die normalspurigen Güterwagen auf Rollwagen geladen.
