Early in the morning March 12 2019, NSB announced they are changing their 135 year old brand and name to Vy. They also presented a new livery on a Flirt during the presentation. Inspired by this I created a reskin of my Flirt.
The mod is available on the Steam workshop. The green parts can be recolored. Stats are all the same like the NSB Flirt, except this one arrives in 2019.

The .mdl file is a text file written in LUA. You only need a text editor for that. Notepad++ is excellent. If you're on Mac I highly recommend CODA. It's gorgeous (and makes me miss having a Mac..)
I use this model converter to convert .obj to .msh/.msh.blob
My 3D models are made in Modo and textured with Substance Painter. Both of them cost money, but you can get Modo Indie on Steam which is quite a bit cheaper than the full app, and Substance Painter can be obtained for free if you're a student.
While Substance Painter isn't required to create textures, it is definitely the best way, as it's simply "what you see is what you get", and you can paint directly on the 3D model instead of a flat UV map.
Alternatives are 3Ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D (and the list goes on..). The only free 3D modeler I know of is Blender.
@ Olha Haldor how do I find out on Steam, if I have subscribed mods from Velvet? a direct search for "velvet" in the workshop, of course, nothing and under the user search of Steam, he finds thousands ... Do you have anything that limits the search?

That is his workshop for Transport Fever.
@ 'Macongo'
It was never published, because we caught him in the act before it got to the point.
The guy who made the videos for him have said there were other mods in the making, which when he inspected the original content compared to the mods he was given to make videos of, is a complete rip of Train Simulator and other third party creators.
There's no telling if Velvet will remove all the other mods he in fact got approval to do from the original content creator. IF he does, it'll probably ruin a few people's savegames. Better safe than sorry.
Velvet (previously VelvetMafia) have been caught stealing 3d models again. This time he didn't get as far as releasing it on Steam or anywhere else as I know.
There is a video of a HST, which appears to come from a website that has a lot of ripped game models from TrainSimulator. The ripped model is property of Dovetail Games. Even if the model is available, it's not OK to download and publish. Especially not as "his own".
The video creator was given the mod for the video production and is not affiliated with the creation of the mod or stealing the model as far as we know.
killakanz and others have discussed and pointed out several details that are too similar to have any doubt he in fact used the model he found. It even goes as deep as specific details and faults in the texture, and smoothing angles of certain parts of the mesh.
After details have been revealed, he fled from the discord server and blocked the video creator. Clearly guilty since he's not sticking around to prove he's not.
So for what it's worth; take care of any mods you've subscribed to on Steam from Velvet in case they disappear an ruin your savegames.
After the previous round he apologized, said he had learned his lesson and wouldn't do it again. Fast forward a few months: repeat.
We're all gutted and disappointed.
I've been using Painter for about 5-6 years now. Haven't looked back.
I can't even imagine texturing any of my models with Photoshop (or Gimp). It would be so much trial and error with placement of labels and text, not to speak of insane amounts of trial and error to get normals and specular etc right.
Get the trial, see where it leads you. Don't give up when you're going uphill and feel things aren't going your way. Turn to the forum and ask.
Watch (and follow!) tutorials, learn how to do specific things, or specific tools. Sooner or later it will click and you feel all boundaries are broken!
If you can, I recommend you buy from Allegorithmic instead of on Steam. The value of the material library is worth it! It truly is!
It's true you can't type text in Painter directly (unless you make a filter for it in Substance Designer first), but it's not really much hassle to make your own alpha.
Type whatever you want, lay it out on a 2K x 2K image, and paint away. I often make several texts or symbols on one. Less alphas and files to keep up with.
I can only answer for myself, but there are multiple reasons why I did not participate.
Nothing wrong with the time frame imho, but the timing itself, some busy with exams, others busy with crunch at work before the summer etc..
I get both sides of the story here. The host is disappointed about the lack of competitors, and the potential content creators who did not compete feel they're being 'called out' because they didn't compete.
I do not mind new contests, but the theme and reason to compete definitely needs to be a driving force for me.
Either way: best of luck to those who participate
Just make sure you export as 16-bit, and that the scaled file is also 16-bit when you make the map for TPF. Or else you will get stepping.
Let me know if you have any questions regarding WM
Even though you're limited to 513x513 in the free version, you can scale it up after export in Gimp, Photoshop, or whatever software you use, if you want a larger map
Detail will be lost, but you'll still get a decent map!
You must be resident in the EU or Switzerland to enter the competition
So does that mean I can't participate ?
Oh.. That's nowhere in the english text. I don't know german, thus I didn't unfold that one. Perhaps it should be mentioned in the english text
I don't get it. It's a competition? What's the prize?
Alex (who converts a lot of the russian trains) beat me to it. And his model looks phenomenal! He's probably got more time on his hands than I do, and I have barely made progress since the screenshot I posted.
What happens with the one I have started on? I'm thinking I could make my own twist and put it under the Hexagon brand I started with the modding competition this summer.
Due to a recent reveal of a new truck, I couldn't help myself.
I think this will be my little side project while on paternity leave the coming couple of weeks.
Perhaps some of you recognize the brand.
First time doing a truck instead railway related model.

In the end, Urban Games is a good mod. And the public vote by subscribing.
In the competition rules there was no mention of "original designs".
Some modders are exceptionally capable of making original designs. Others are not.
Whether someone is allowed to compete or not.
If you do not like a specific mod - do not vote. Easy as that.
Look at what they imagined to look like in the future, back in the 80's.
And look at what we have
It is impossible to predict what the future looks like. And whether someone likes a mod or not is a very individual thing.
Making a great looking and functional design.
My participating mods aren't doing exceptionally well in the public votes, but at least I tried. And I happily cast my vote on a couple of the contestants because I think they are worthy the prize.
What grinds my gears are those who set a negative rating on my mods without telling me why. Out of the first 100 ratings I got, 15-20 of them were negative. It's fine that people don't like what I do, but at least I'd like to know why, so I can learn, evolve, and do better. I wish you were required to write a comment when you rate an item in the workshop, positive or negative.
I spent a lot of time, and have figured it out now. Just forgot to come back to tell about it. Thanks
It was Alex who told me in chat once, and then I adjusted my Substance Painter export preset to take this into consideration.
So I have two export presets now. One for TGA export for rapid adjustments and fixes when I use the model viewer without having to convert to DDS - this does not swap the red and green channels in the normal map.
The other export preset will also export TGA, but with red and green channels swapped in the normal map, and then I bring it all in Photoshop to convert to DDS
