The scenery was fantastic...sights you would never appreciate along the auto route.
The trip was in October, so along the way, you would see a small stack of rocks along the tracks. That was the signal to the engineer that there were people, who had spent the Summer in the wilderness, waiting ahead for their trip to Anchorage, and back to civilization for the Winter. The train would stop and pick up some very rough-looking characters. Considering these people had spent their time in the wilderness hundreds of miles from any form of civilization since they arrived in the Spring, one understands why they looked a little rough around the edges!
