, that is currently just how it is as I did want to keep the tris limited.
But there is a function in blender called smoothing then it would not look so edgy anymore.

I must admit I'm not a fan of Blender, I use it to convert from 3ds to fbx and get some UV's, nothing more. Unfortunately Blender doesn't apply all added functions from my 3ds VIZ files. But I will have a look at it, I mainly dislike the Blender UI being so keyboard driven.

Oh wow..... old school cars......
Working on the next car, being a '96 Honda Civic and experimenting with Blenders Shade smooth modifier.
A bit cumbersome as I import the 3ds in Blender 2.79, I can then copy the mesh to Blender 2.8 and there add the shade smooth modifier. The smooth modifier in 2.79 gives a different, not nice, result.
Is there a 3ds import option for Blender 2.8 that I overlooked?
thanks MaikC and more tips are always welcome
Wow, thats a difference! Have you used the edge split modifier additionally to set the max. angle that gets smoothed? I worked with 2.79 + 2.92 (without importing 3ds but with edge split modifier) and haven't noticed a difference with the smoothing effect but maybe they changed something with the defaults.

That's why I don't use 3ds as the "transport format", then all modifiers that were set in the original program are gone. In any case, I haven't found an option yet.
That doesn't happen with Obj.
But be careful, then you have to
1. Untick autosmooth (Data Tab)
2. Set a modifier ---> edge split -> Sharp edges --> Untick Edge angle(Or you can also set an edge angle if there are still edges that should look "sharp" or mark edges as sharp --> select edge(s)-->strg+e-->mark sharp)
If fbx does not apply the modifier automatically during the export, then the modifier also had to "apply" before export.
You can of course also just try the second point.
Set an edgesplit modifier and change the edge angle until it looks good. Setting sharp edges by hand as I wrote above is possible, but annoying
Unfortunatly my legacy 3D max tool (3D VIZ4 I'm using) doesn't have .obj export. Only .3ds and .stl are compatible.
But till about a year ago I had never used Blender, with practice efficiency increases, so I'll just keep going and keep learning more.

I've used only the Shade Smooth in Blender 2.82, then with ctrl+c & v copied the mesh back to my model in Blender 2.79 and exported from there.

In the case you didnt notice Try this

Interesting workflow. I didn't know this is possible. You never stop learning. I tried it but it does not make a difference for me, appart from the fact the 3D-Viewer in 2.79 is generally not as good as the newer versions.
Are you exporting from 2.79 with FBX or with the Merk-AddOn? If you use FBX and want to get more into Blender I would recommend to use 2.8 or higher the earlier the better. They changed a lot in the UI/handling (will take some time to get used to it and in my opinion they improved a lot).
Main reason for the 2.79 version is the 3ds import feature. I just pull the uv-maps, most I just take as the (smart) unwrap will provide and then an fbx export. So for that didn't really feel the need to switch to 2.8, also as I then just got a bit used to 2.7.
Trying with the edge split now and that does improve indeed.
1st image has a smaller angle set I like that the plating around the wheels is still flat but the bumper isn't rounded yet, 2nd image therefore is better.
I'll see for some youtube tutorial to get a more familiar as I expect you can limit the effect to parts of the mesh...
Repaint for the Bochum fire department, I'm tending to go with the yellow markings...
First I want to thank you for all the great mods and fire trucks. It’s great that you’re expanding the package. Maybe other repaints will come from other fire brigades. In the link there's a vehicle of the Bochum fire brigade which also has a nice design of "Atemschutz" ( maybe it looks better?).
Of course a bit of fantasy is included, but I think the yellow kind of matches the 1990's/early 20's. So proceeded on that for the ladder truck.
PS The ladder base will remain plain red as otherwise it has a big impact on the asset construction.
Beauties right here!!!
The Bochum fire vehicle are ready and will be available shortly.
I've also note a few other points of improvement that I corrected as well.
If you note any issues, like e.g. the operator was misplaced in certain rotations of the ladder, please drop me a note.
