Hey everyone! I've tried the 4k and 2k texture for my train mod, but it seems there is not much quality different in the game. I was wondering, Is there any recommended texture size for the mod? A one that could have the best quality and yet doesn't go beyond the game's ability to handle.
Is there any recommended texture size for the mod?

I have used 2048x2048 with all my mods for a complete locomotive/wagon. The Vanilla GE Genesis has original 4k textures. In my mod I scaled down to 2k ... to see no differences in quality. As you said.
For Mods with seamless tiles (trainstation, texaco station, train depot) i used 256x256 but mostly 128x128

I usually use 2048²-Textures for trains. Smaller wagons/vehicles may fit on 1024².

It depends a bit on the size of the object you want to paint. If you build a large object, a small texture file will result in the pixels of the texture being proportionally "blown up" - a tiny texture on the Hindenburg for example will not look nice. On a small object, a 4k texture file will be unnecessary as you will not be able to see the textures details - think Mona Lisa on a pinhead...
Experiment a bit. Err on the large side and try to downsize the texture file to see if it still looks good

Yep, 2k seems to be the norm. If it's not too big, you could try and go for 1024x1024, although my tip would be to always start large and then see if you can scale down.
By the way, DH-106 is right, there is a difference between 2k and 4k. But if you can't see it: go for 2k. The difference for my Horton-in-Ribblesdale station was rather extreme, thus why I stuck with 4k.

Thank you all for sharing, the thing that bugs me is that in the same model some details wouldn't show more clearly (like texts) even when I go for better quality texture. This makes me think bigger size texture might not necessary since it wouldn't make any difference. Maybe I should use a smaller size texture for a better game performance?

You can also try to map your texture in a way that makes parts with text bigger and simpler parts (unicolor or almost unicolor - stripes for example) smaler. Pro: smaler texture with also good quality. Contra: repainters will hate you - when its not impossible at all.
-
Ha~ I think not only the repainters will hate me. I will hate myself too.

What you experience here might has to do with the compression of dds textures...
