Getting smooth terrain from greyscale height maps? - GIMP 2.8

    Hello,
    I have made a terrain map in grey scale based off of a topo map that i redraw in 32 shade greyscale.
    I use 80m as my lowest shade of grey and rise in 33m steps per shade of grey.
    everything looks ok. I have the outlines looking good.
    But the Gausian blurr filter in GIMP 2.8 still leaves very obvious steps in the terrain.


    Does anyone know a good method to smooth out the terrain? ?(

    read the installation instructions...


    Need to be a software engineer just to install the dependent packages... I will wait till they have a windows stable install.


    I just learnt how to press F12 in steam and get a screen shot.
    Anyway here is a screen shot the terracing problem I am getting even after gaussian blurr filter being applied.
    I have also added a blurr layer of a duplicate of my rivers layer causing a smooth embankment to rivers.
    This causes the overlapping terraces you can see too.

    I looked at GIMP 9.4.2 but you need to install over 15 packages and the like to even install and I can't understand it.

    Sowieso hier ist ein Schirmschuß das Terrassenproblem, das ich sogar erhält, nachdem Gaußscher Unschärfefilter angewendet wird.

    verursacht eine glatte Böschung zu Flüssen hinzugefügt.

    Ich schaute auf GIMP 9.4.2 aber Sie müssen über 15 Pakete und dergleichen

    Without an image tool that supports 16 bit you won't get far with hilly heihtmaps:


    Assuming you have a difference of 1024 meter between lowest and highest point, each color value will result in 4 meter height different, which results in the steps you see.
    With 16bit, your have 216 = 65536 color values, thus with the same range, each value only results in 0.0156 meter of height difference -> This is much smoother.


    It is a pity, that Gimp 2.8 does not support 16 bit PNG... If you cannot use Gimp 2.9, you may want to look for any other image processing software that understands 16 bit channels.



    It is absolutely sufficient if you write in a single language, everything else is more distracting than helping.

    Unfortunately GIMP 2.9 is a nightmare to install. You need to go off and find a dozen or more little software pieces and add them into it for it to work.
    What the hell is a tarball?
    Even the German site that had the WIN 10 install for GIMP 2.9 didn't work as there were plugin dll's missing. And there was no plug -in folder in the directories to put them into.
    Either way i am no software engineer and I prefer an install file as opposed to putting things together.
    Did you find it very hard to install ?


    I am now going to look for a 16 bit program that can export greyscale PGN.

    On this web page click "Manuelle Installation", then "Download-Server CHIP Online".
    This is a self-extractable zip archive, so no installation or configuration is needed.
    Just unzip and run run_gimp.bat.


    This version is now nearly one year old, but it worked for me for creating maps.
    This version is also multi-language.

    I cant believe how hard it is to achieve a 16bit greyscale image with whats available.

    Did you get this problem where a whole bunch of DLL files are missing?
    I run the extract file and run the batch file and this was my result.

    I have to use task manager to interupt the install otherwise it just cycles through the same messages about missing dll files.


    Did this happen to you?
