The trains were not very widespread, but they had a pioneering role in Germany. They were among the first electric (3-part) multiple units that were used not only in the flatlands (S-Bahn Berlin and Hamburg), but also under harsher conditions in the mountains. The construction of electric trains and the electrification of the routes were not very advanced at that time.
They were essentially sort of prototype tests, but the trains performed very well.
